Words 8.3

Words Twice a Week 8.3

From the Church Calendar -
Aug 3  Joanna, Salome, Mary–  myrrh-bearing women on Easter morning.  Three women that just went ahead and did what needed to be done, while the disciples were hiding out, wringing their hands, lost.  Sometimes when all is in turmoil and confusion (like now!), and you just go ahead doing what needs to be done, you can encounter the beginnings of resurrection!  Here’s their collect -
Almighty God, who revealed the resurrection of your Son to Joanna, Mary and Salome, as they faithfully came bearing myrrh to his tomb: Grant that we too may perceive the presence of the risen Lord in the midst of pain and fear, that we may go forth proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.
Aug 6  The Transfiguration of the Lord  -  I'm more used to this on the last Sunday before Lent.
Aug 7  John Mason Neale/Catherine Winkworth – hymn writers, translators, poets.  Neale translated many of our most familiar hymns – All Glory Laud and Honor, Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain, and The Day of Resurrection among them. He was involved in writing Good King Wenceslaus.  He actually died on Aug 6.  Winkworth translated Lift Up Your heads, Ye mighty Gates and Now Thank We all Our God.
Aug 8  Dominic  a priest, he founded the Dominicans. An order of preachers, they used informed preaching and intelligent teaching to spread the faith while mainly the church was using violent and loveless methods.  The Dominicans went on to found some great universities.

From the World’s Calendar -
Aug 3  Joseph Conrad died [1924], Martha Stewart was born [1941]  So that’s a day, isn’t it.  From the Heart of Darkness to Martha Stewart Living!  We made her bakeless cheesecake a couple of time.  It was good.
Aug 6
+Lucille Ball was born 1911
+The US bombed Hiroshima [1945] – over 100,000 were killed in the blast
+LBJ signed the Voting Rights Act [1965]
So another day that shows the real mixture of human qualities and actions.
Aug 8  The Wright Brothers flew publicly for the first time.  The start of a good thing? Or not?
Aug 9
+The US bombed Nagasaki – 70,000 were killed
+Walden was published [1854].  Thoreau was at the pond for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days.  What was that about, I wonder?  Guess I’ll have to look a little deeper.

Prayers
This is a prayer from the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council -
A Prayer for Living the Gospel
God of yesterday, today and tomorrow,
we call to mind your presence within us and around us.
Open our ears that we may hear your Word.
Open our hearts that we may understand your Word.
Open our mouths that we may speak your Word.
Inspire us with the gospel message,
that we may celebrate all that is life-giving,
restore hope where it has been lost,
and work to bring about change where it is needed.
May we live the gospel with courage, constancy, and love.
May we be open to the challenge of your call to true freedom.
May we be faithful to you in our daily choices and decisions.
May we make your love known through our words and actions.
May the Triune God reign in our hearts, now and forever.
